For My Father
My Father turns sixty today
I guess I should see him in a different way
What I know best is he has a heart of gold
And all these years he has been my whole world
He’s kind and strong and this shows right through
And everything he says is true
His human qualities are valued more than gold or a gem
On any day he rises above all men
I remember when I was a little girl we would work out on the lawn
Pierced through the sun’s silhouette and underneath his brawn
I saw his shoulders of rocks and his hands of steel
But what I saw most of all was his tenderness and heart so real
We have had our share of fights and bouts
But through it all love never came in doubt
I know he’ll always be there for me
And would die to protect our family
On this special day I reflect a bit
To try and thank him for the light in my life he has lit
But no words or song or rhyme or poem
Could ever express my pride in him and what a special place he has made home
So I will tell my Father the best way I can
That on this earth there stands no greater man
But I will do this in no grand show or twist or shout
For my Father I will just hug, I think that’s what it’s all about.

My Mother's Best Friend
My Mother weeps, her best friend of seventeen years just died
My Father buried him near the barn in the cold outside
Coco’s collar lies atop the custom-made gravestone
Every day my Mother brings him a fresh doggie bone
I’ve seen how close human and animal souls can be
I grew up with such love of dogs in my family
Now without a bark or a jump when we come home
Emptiness has found a new meaning, we are truly alone
My first cherished memories of Sampson, our poodle, virgin white
A gift from Santa under the tree on Christmas night
We always had pets in our home
It made our life happy, healthy and warm
Max the gray Weimaraner, lanky, clumsy and such a delight
Rosie our apricot poodle, would sleep on Daddy’s belly at night
Besides our dogs we always had other pets running around
Fish, cats, birds, lizards and guinea pigs abound
My parakeet died when I came home from school one day
I buried her with my cross around her neck, so quiet and still she lay
Yet most of all, what must be said with care and special mention
Is my horse Poco, who made my life worth every second
And reflecting back now I see my youth in a different way
Through Poco my Parents taught boundless lessons to me in life every day
Every fall off my horse I learned to get back on
Every ribbon I won, now has more meaning now that Poco is gone
And when my horse had a tragic accident
My Mother and Father faced a potent event
The decision to give Poco life that day
Showed their faith in me in an unmentionable way
Nursing a wounded animal back to health
Gives a child the power to face life without need for want or wealth
The gift of pride my parents gave to me
Is what has made my life worth everything it can be
So this little story of pets and family for now will end
Yet I know more pets in our life are sure to come again

Lover
Years ago we met one night
My soulmate stood in plain sight
A gift from god just for me
I never knew how lucky I’d be
In an instant my life changed forever
My friend, companion and lifelong lover
Who makes me smile and laugh and cry
Without him I would just evaporate and die
Man is not worth his weight in gold
But for the strength he has and the kindness he holds
As I reflect and now look back
I see how much he has and how much I lack
And as we go on together through triumph and stress
We’ve grown as one where no one is less
I thank god every day for his gift
Never again will I want nor drift

nine eleven
Now I'm awake half awake with fear
Walking among heroes who try not to shed a tear
Fathers and sons who now protect us from above
Mothers and children, saints whose work has just begun
The ones who lived through an act of hate
Will help the weak without knowing this fate
We go back to routine and know we must
If we don't there is no meaning in the dust
And as I lay down to go back to sleep
I'll dream my dreams and that's where I'll weep
When I awake I'll be grateful for what I know
The blessed gifts I have of family and love I'll never let go

Angels on Earth
Angels on earth are far and few between
there is one so rare that my eyes have seen
she frees the horses souls to roam
and asks for nothing in return
I'm honored to be in this land
where you can come and lend a hand
what more on earth could anyone want
but to give and feel a horse at heart
I am blessed to be in their presence
they awake my heart, I've said my penance
if I died on any given day
I've lived my life happy today
I thank this angel for her gift
she saves the horses in quiet bliss
when you ponder what life is all about
it's as simple as angels on earth, no doubt

Paprika
One beautiful summer I came to this farm
my knee was hurt and my body was worn
my coat was rough and my spirit was low
but nice people loved me and I soon began to glow
They fed me and brushed me, I was never alone
how lucky I was to call this farm home
I had so much love and lots of fun
and I found a handsome boyfriend named Stetson
We would go for walks along the windy trail
he'd go slow for me so I wouldn't falter or fail
with big blue skies and green fields of magic
plentiful earth and my own private paddock
My mom's the best in every way
she born this place ~ God's piece of heaven on earth I'd say
one morning as we prayed, I said it's ok for me to go
you have to save another soul, these are the seeds you sow
As the autumn leaves fell where I rested on the hill
I gave my thanks as I lay peaceful and still
now I watch over my friends in this happy place
I run with them in the big wild open space

Little Creatures
Little Creatures have their wondrous place
they put a smile on our face
one of mother nature's special gems
come in all forms as friends
Dogs and cats and chickens - cock a too
foxes and ducks and rabbits too
they touch our hearts in their own way
it's the small and special things they say
Say you say do little creatures speak?
you have to be around them to see this feat
they look right into your eyes
when trust is earned - a bond forever ties
Little creatures have feelings they laugh and cry
they are so pure - they never lie
each one unique no dups or clones
they roam in mother nature's home
On her big green earth she tends to them
she watches over her great big den
the special ones have a greater purpose
that's one of life's surprises - she knows it
When mother nature and god meet for coffee
he says it's time to let some special ones go free
mother nature's done her job to protect them from man
now in god's world - there is a bigger plan
His plan's a secret - no one knows
thank god for friends to share our woes
mother nature goes back to watch her land
there's more work to do - little creatures need her helping hand

Idaho Blue
Idaho blue is a place in this land
rivers, mountains and lakes in our hand
tips of pine trees that touch the sky
reflections of river stone dance in your eye
From far away we came and we learned
what others discovered before we were born
the old pioneers stood on virgin land
the new frontier now is where we stand
Grizzly's, moose, deer, eagles and all wild life
we will protect so no more will they strife
we'll do what we can to keep watch and ponder
the sun sets low, we're quiet at all god's wonder
For now we go and part the mountain
our hearts, minds, emotion left here to come back to
jim, michele, mark, tawnie and brent
captain curtis, linda, alan and skip
accidental friends that found each other
between hope and clark fork, thank you mother nature
